what is organic?
Organic simply means food that has been grown or produced without chemical aid. It respects the natural capacity of plants, of animals and the landscape, turning back to a time before artificial fertilizers, pesticides and other chemicals were introduced.

You may have also come across the term organic at your local nursery. In this sense, organic implies compounds which occur naturally and has nothing to do with the term organic as we use it. Organic fertilizers at the garden shop simply mean fertilizers which are produced from animal or plant matter. Fact is, they most likely will contain chemicals.

raised without synthetic fertilizers

The health of the soil lies at the heart of organic crop farming and is maintained using natural methods, which do not strip the minerals from the soil or contaminate crops or the environment.

Organic farmers replace pesticides with time-proven techniques, such as crop rotation and by encouraging the natural predators of pests. Khakibos and strawberries for example are planted together because they complement each other and keep pests away effectively. No chemicals, no herbicides or pesticides, or artificial substances are used at any stage. The produce is entirely natural, pure and nutritious.

Many forms of modern agriculture on the other hand use artificial fertilizers, which displace the natural mineral content of the soil and the produce. Plants themselves may be genetically manipulated and sprayed with chemical pesticides and herbicides. After harvesting, the produce is then processed further, where other chemicals (such as preservatives) may be added.

The end result is food that yields a fraction of the nutrition than it would in its pure, natural state, as well as chemical toxicity.

kind to environment

Organic farming is also better for the environment. It lowers water pollution and builds soil fertility. Whatever is produced can be put back into the earth to produce more, purer fruit and vegetables, which is sustainable. olli organic promotes self-reliance at farm level. Our farmers rely less on expensive purchased goods more on creating their own inputs. They grow crops that are healthy and that have a natural resistance to pests and disease. This makes organic farming more suitable as a tool for developing farming in our resource-poor rural areas. olli organic is involved with and supports various smaller scale farmers.

Our wildlife prefers organic too. Biodiversity is one of the main principles of organic agriculture which means no toxic synthetic chemicals are sprayed on crops. As a result, organic farms are home to great numbers and species of birds, insects, plants and other wildlife.

contains no additives

Processed organic food does not contain any chemical food additives. It may not contain artificial preservatives, flavourants or colourants, which can all contribute towards certain health problems such as migraines, hyperactivity and degenerative diseases.

There is absolutely no nutritional reason to include additives such as salt and sugar in baby foods. Internationally it is the norm not to add sugar or salt to baby food. And because olli is made from only pure organic ingredients, it is full of mother nature's flavour.
organic food is more nutritious

Organic foods have higher levels of nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. This results in fuller, more wholesome and delicious flavours. Organic food is also your only guarantee that it is chemically free of pesticides.

Organic farmers do not use any chemical herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers, their methods produce wholesome food from healthy soil, food that is typically higher in mineral content than conventionally grown crops. Buying certified organic food is the surest way that we have to ensure we get as close to pesticide-free food in our diet as possible.

There are a number of exciting and valid studies supporting the health benefits of eating organic. Tests carried out by the Camden Food and Drink Association for example showed that organic potatoes contained 26% more zinc; organic tomatoes 17.5% more vitamin C and 25% more vitamin A; and organic apples 11% more vitamin C.
